How about 5 Star Employee Service

If you think about it, you tip your waiter, the kid at the car wash, you pay top dollar for your favorite hair stylist or lawyer....so why then, when you go to hire, do you try to get someone for the cheapest price?

If you're going to spend money investing in your business, spend it on your employees. They are your advertising, your first impression, the labor of all that happens in your business every day...all day. Listen to them. Train them. Incentivize them. Pay them well.

Too many business owners try to squeeze every hour, minute, dollar, ounce of energy out of their employees without trying to give anything. If you're just going to criticize and never praise, demand but never offer to help, offer no training but expect perfection, blame instead of take responsibility, you are setting YOUR business up to fail.

You probably went into business because you became in expert in your field. Maybe you build a really good product or you've honed your accounting skills. Although that is awesome that you've decided to take it to market and become an entrepreneur, remember there is more to running a business than just selling your widget/service.

If you want to grow, you will at some point have to hire people. Those people come with their own skillset, mindset, personality, quirks, etc. You are now in Human Resources!!

These people need guidance, understanding, praise, constructive criticism but they don't need to be the blame for what's wrong in your business. Take responsibility for problems by dealing with them.

Now obviously if you have a bad egg...someone that just can't comply with your guidelines or produce what they promised to, you may have to make some adjustments but do so quickly, professionally, and within the parameters of the right expectations. First try to look at the situation from all angles and make sure you did all you could do to train and guide that person before letting them go.

Step 1

One of the first steps to ensure you hire right for you is to create an avatar of your perfect employee. What skills do you want them to have? What type of personality do you think will fit well with your organization? What is their age? Education? Consider how they spend their free time. Knowing these answers will not only help you bring the right person in, but you'll know where to find them.

Step 2

Secondly, learn how to recruit and hire better. Don't prejudge based off a resume. If you know what the person's skills should be and the personality and age range of your preferred prospect, search for them where they are. If your demographic is someone fresh out of college, post your job there. If you want someone more experience, consider posting on job boards & LinkedIn. Conduct phone interviews personally!!

Step 3

Third, once you get them, treat them well. Get to know them. Learn the best way to communicate with them. Not everyone can handle a screaming boss and others will walk all over you if you're not firm enough. YOU CANNOT EFFECTIVELY MANAGE PEOPLE IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THEM!!

I think the mentality is that if you reward them, they will slack off and think they've made it. This is NOT true about most people and if it happens, you have to adjust your approach....or consider if this person is in fact, a slacker.

Ask what they need. Find out about their life. How are they motivated? Plan accordingly.

If you have a team or want to grow one and want to implement an incentive or training program, send us a message. We understand you, as the business owner or sales manager, don't always have the time to implement these strategies so let us do that for you.

To your Success!
